1. The Thurston Lava Tube, also known as Nahuku, is a natural lava tube located in the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park on the Big Island of Hawaii. The tube was formed over 500 years ago during a volcanic eruption when lava flowed underground, creating a tunnel-like cave. The lava cooled on the outside, forming a hardened crust that eventually created the roof of the tube. When the lava flow stopped, a hollow tunnel remained.
Visitors can walk through the Thurston Lava Tube and explore the unique geological formations created by the lava. The tunnel is illuminated with electric lights, making it easy to see the various features, including stalactites, stalagmites, and other lava formations. The tube is around 600 feet long and visitors can expect to spend around 20-30 minutes exploring it.
2. The Thurston Lava Tube is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. There is no phone for the site available, as it is a part of the national park.
3. There is no charge to visit the Thurston Lava Tube as it is located within the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, which does have an entrance fee. The current fee is $30 per vehicle or $25 per motorcycle, which is valid for up to seven days. There are also various tour companies that offer transportation to the park, including shuttles and guided tours.
