It was originally founded in the year 738 by Emperor Shomu as the head temple of all provincial Buddhist temples in Japan. The main hall of Todai-ji, known as the Daibutsuden (Great Buddha Hall), is one of the largest wooden buildings in the world and houses a massive statue of Buddha known as the Daibutsu (Great Buddha).
