Join us on an exhilarating Super Jeep adventure from Vík í Mýrdal to explore the spectacular Katla Ice Cave, on the mighty Mýrdalsjökull glacier. This glacier is one of Iceland’s most famous, and from it flows the powerful Kötlujökull glacier, named after the legendary Katla volcano. Over time, this massive glacier has slowly crept down the volcanic slopes, carving out some of Iceland’s most awe-inspiring natural ice caves. On the glacier you’ll witness a dramatic fusion of crystal-blue ice and deep-black volcanic ash—a surreal contrast that feels straight out of a fantasy film. Led by experienced local guides in a specially modified Super Jeep, this off-the-beaten-path journey promises unforgettable views, fascinating geology, and one of the most unique photo ops Iceland has to offer. You’ll understand the magic the moment you step on the ice.

It was a fun time! The super jeep was bumpy but kind of a blast. I did not expect the difficulty and precariousness of the hike to the ice cave. The cave itself is small but it was still really cool. Our guide was amazing!

We loved our tour of the Katla ice cave! The cave was a little smaller than expected but reasonable in October. Our kids loved hiking up to the cave and across the glacier. Alex was absolutely phenomenal and so great with our kids; we all absolutely adored him. He was a wealth of knowledge and had so many interesting things to share about Iceland and Katla. We felt so lucky and grateful to have him as our guide! Would definitely recommend.

Our guide was great, but the ride out there is alot rougher than I expected it to be. I thoroughly enjoyed the ice cave, but my husband and our friends were hoping it would be larger. Maybe because we went in September and it was warm that the pictures are not as spectacular as the photos on the ad. I would recommend it in the winter, spring, or early summer. However, I got to touch a glacier :-)

Highlight of our trip. The pickup and drop off were smooth. We had a 13yo, 10yo, and 6yo with us and it felt safe and well-done.

Sylvester our guide was awesome even took us on a little side trip where they shot some game of thrones scenes. He even pulled over so we could all get out and look at an arctic fox he saw.

We took the tour on October 2nd. For the price, and prior participant reviews, I had high hope for this tour... 1. the 'super-jeep' (a height-retro fitted 12-person van) was OLD ; bench seats cushion were worn; sitting on the side of the last row, I sat 'slanted'. 2. our tour guide was a very nice young guy. However, he was either very new to the job, or he was just not a person of words. Many online reviewers mention they learned a lot about glaciers. We hardly had 4-5 'mentions' about area we drove by or about glaciers. 3. Took about 30 mins drive to the location, another 20-30 min walking/hiking up to the 'cave'. Our guide took photos for all of us inside the very small ice cave which we lingered for 15-20 minutes. 4. I asked 2 questions; hoping the guide/driver would elaborate but received short answers. 5. On our way back, the van made clinking sound, so the driver/guide stopped to investigate. He decided to wait for the other van's driver/guide (who was a very talkative and seemed more experience) Our van was okay (after whatever the other guide did) and we drove back. Sign up for early tour. Saw 2-3 tours came in as we were leaving. Didn't feel it's worth the money. I found out later that same day when we went to Sólheimajökull Glacier that I could've spent about the same amount for a 3-4 hour glacier walk on Sólheimajökull.

We had an awesome time on the super Jeep and Katla Ice Cave Tour. Our guide's name was Alex and he was in a viking movie. We took some crazy jumps in the jeep and it was a blast. Once he got to the glacier, Alex fitted us with ice spikes for our hiking boots and we got to explore and take pictures in the ice cave. I highly recommend this activity!!

I took the Katla Ice Cave Tour from Vik. My guide was a young man who went by the name of Thor(Great name for a glacier tour guide just imo...). He was extremely friendly, personable, funny, informative, passionate, and warm throughout the tour. He set everyone at ease, while maintaining a safe awareness of surroundings and situation. I would highly recommend asking for him as your guide. I learned so much about the history of the area geographically, culturally, and of the incredible nature of the country's glaciers and volcanos. Hiking on a glacier, let alone to explore an ice cave, is without a doubt a once in a lifetime experience, I recommend to anyone and everyone who is capable of making the journey. One of the most important things to understand is that by the very nature of a glacier, the landscape, and as such the experience, are constantly changing. This means that your experience on your given day is intrinsically unique to any other day/tour. This is wonderful when you realize it in the present moment out on the glacier. But equally important, it also means that what you experience will more than likely NOT BE what you've seen in other glacier cave tour photos. You will have your own unique glacier set up. But if you come seeking a specific formation/location/angle/photo opportunity, as previously seen, you will probably be disappointed. But if you understand this, you can go in with the most openness and receive the best possible outcome. I had hoped to see a specific ring tunnel seen in online videos, only to find once there, that that structure had melted away a year prior. Thor even showed us the negative space where it had occupied. This illustrated how quickly things change on the glacier. When I realized the structure, we were going to was of its own design, and wouldn't be the same again, it made the whole journey that more one of a kind. The cave we visited was in the process of growing deeper so it only went so far in. The entrance, exterior position in the upper wall of the glacier, and outer waterfall were almost more impressive than the newer cave interior itself. That was until I happened to look upwards at a random spot in the cave to discover a 30-foot pure blue ice-chute feeding back up into the glacier. It was magnificent, and the surprise of discovering it, rather than the guide pointing it out made the experience that much more natural and truly adventurous. The only complaints I have are: 1, I wish it was just a little longer of a tour, you really don't want to leave. 2, if you're a smaller person like myself, you may find the lower size crampons a little loose. I had to often wrench them back up my heel to really get a snug fit. We stopped a lot on the tour for photos, notes on nature, and stories in general, so it wasn't too hard finding time to fix them. Plus there are plenty of ropes and space to stamp your feet down. But it was a minor annoyance. Outside of that though the tour was phenomenal! Would definitely book again if I return to the country, especially to see just how much things have changed since the last hike!!
