This is a different kind of a tour to do in Rome. We were amazed by the catacombs, the rest not so much. Thank goodness for an air conditioned bus. Our guide Martina was pleasant but didn't seem to talk as much as the guide with the other group.

There was a reasonable amount of standing/walking, but it was worth it. Although the tour was focused on the crypts and cemeteries of Rome, it was really revealing about Rome through time. Our tour guide Inti, had a lot of historical facts and cracked quite a few jokes! He told us how Rome is like a lasagne, with each civilisation building on top of the last one. The three burial places we were taken to showed us Ancient Pagan Rome, Early Christian Rome and medieval Rome. The Capuchin Crypts were macabre but really interesting. Inti explained how the friars saw their connection to both God and to their fellow brothers throughout time as part of their spiritual life. When they died, their skeletons and bones were displayed in the crypts as a way to continue worshiping God. This included making displays of skulls and other bones! The catacombs were also really interesting, although all the bodies have been removed. We could see and understand how early Christians initially sheltered from Roman authorities and then became accepted by Rome after Constantine. The final burial place was in a church and we could see the layers of Rome through history.

This tour will take you underground into catacombs and historical practices of the cappuccine friars. They don’t fear death and have a beautiful interpretation of the circle of life.

Loved it! Our tour guide, Paula, was very knowledgeable. There was many steps and walking but so worth the aching feet!

Capuchin crypt was the highlight. A bit creepy and weird, in a good way. Inti was our guide and he was very enthusiastic and clear to understand. This was easy to book and easy to find to start the tour. Only downside was that we did not return to starting point (as stated in the description and on the ticket) and that meant a 20 min walk back.

Price was spot on . Our tour guide, Cat, was very knowledgeable and shared her love of Rome’s history was evident. The guides at the Catacombs of St Callixtus were good as well. The tour ended with a visit to the Bascilica of St Sylvester and St Martin. We were able to go into the crypt and then one level below that to see an excavation of a Christian Roman house.
