Hell's Gate Mud Bath & Spas

The mud was fun and created laughter, the hot pool was relaxing. There was construction happening, they didn’t tell us until AFTER we had checked in and paid. Didn’t realize boardwalk repair crew would be 3 meters away the whole time. The staff thst took us to pool were very friendly and helpful, but again workers took away from the experience. Would probably only recommend with families because kids would think it was fun. Wouldn’t do it again.

We started our visit with the best tour guide Zia, was so informative and gave us lots of info about Māori Culture even did the Hal’s for us. Then off too lunch, mud and sulphur pools. Wonderful day and would not hesitate to recommend.

This was one of the most enjoyable and informative activities we did in New Zealand. We took a guided tour, which I highly recommend. Our guide, Xia, shared so much information about the area, and Māori culture and history. He demonstrated songs, prayers and even a haka, which was really something special. The first time I looked at my watch I was shocked that 90 minutes had passed! The carving was enjoyable, and to finish the whole experience with the mud and thermal baths was perfect.

So much fun! We bought the tour and mud baths package and it was well worth it. Tour guide was exceptional, kept the tour entertaining and informative simultaneously. Learnt a lot about the Māori history of the area and the science behind geothermal areas, along with viewing an absolutely beautiful waterfall surrounding by orange trees that are stained by the geothermal minerals which feels otherworldly. The mud baths experience was very unique, we opt to stay longer in the normal hot pools after next time (as your time on the mud baths is timed for safety reasons). Major tip - don’t wear good bathers in the mud baths and I even recommend renting. It took me months to get the sulphur smell out of my bathers and I unfortunately washed them in hot water (do not do this) and the smell spread to other clothes in the load. PS. hells gate has the second largest mud volcano in the world!

Amazing experience! Awesome geo thermal walk, spectacular mud bath. There is a free shuttle going back to the city center. For me, its better than Iceland blue lagoon, its low key and its cheaper! I will definitely come back!

I got there earlier than my mud bath booking so I joined Zia's guided tour! And boy o boy, I am so glad I did. Zia was incredibly likeable with his sense of humour and his incredible local knowledge. He welcomed us traditionally with a Huka and continued to share Maori knowledge with us. I am so so glad I did the guided tour. Brilliant - thanks Zia. The mud / mineral baths were also very well run by incredibly helpful staff who took photos for us using our phones which were in the gardens! After my spa experience, and looking 10 years younger, I sat in the Cafe for a mince & cheese pie & spicy Chai. So so good.

We started with the self-guided geothermal walk, and the landscape blew us away — bubbling mud pools, steaming vents, and even a hot waterfall. Then came the real highlight: the mud bath and sulphur spa experience. Floating in warm, silky grey mud is something I never thought I’d enjoy, but it was strangely soothing and so much fun! You only get 20 minutes in the mud for skin safety reasons, but it was perfect. Afterwards, soaking in the hot sulphur pools with views of the forest was the perfect way to unwind. Staff were super friendly and the facilities were clean and well-organised. Lockers, showers, even a drying machine for your swimwear — they’ve thought of everything. We left feeling relaxed, skin soft as silk, and totally recharged. Would 100% go again!

Informed, relaxing. Took my daughters who were so against it and now want to go again. Great family experience
