- The Palais Gallien is a Roman amphitheater that dates back almost 2,000 years. It’s one of the few remaining remnants of Roman life in Bordeaux.Way back in the 3rd century AD, the Palais Gallien was used for gladiatorial bouts and could hold some 20,000 spectators. Although only the ruined walls remain, this atmospheric location will take you right back to centuries past. Stride through the monumental gateway and imagine how it would have felt appearing here in front of a roaring crowd. It’s close to the city center and easy to combine in a day with other activities such as a gourmet walking tour of the town or a visit to one of the museums.*At the Visitors' Center, you can see a recreation of how the arena would have looked when it was first built. *There’s no fee to view the amphitheater. *It’s not possible to walk through the amphitheater itself, but you can admire the view from the outside. *On the western side, there are benches for visitors to sit on and information panels giving more details about the building.The Palais Gallien is located at Rue du Docteur Albert Barraud in the northwest of Bordeaux city center. You can access the site on foot, by bike, or by tram – Line C stops a short distance away at Jardin Public.The amphitheater is open daily year round. The site is completely outdoors so best enjoyed in dry weather.One of Bordeaux’s most famous sights, the Place de la Bourse faces the river Garonne and is a reminder of the city’s importance in centuries past. Built in the 18th century, the buildings here once housed the Bordeaux stock exchange as well as several private houses. The addition of the striking Miroir d’Eau water feature in 2006 has turned this grand space into a must-visit destination.
