1. Rila Monastery is a magnificent Bulgarian Orthodox monastery located in the Rila Mountains, approximately 120 kilometers south of Sofia. It is one of the most important cultural, historical, and architectural landmarks in Bulgaria.
The monastery was founded in the 10th century by the hermit Ivan Rilski, who chose the remote and beautiful Rila Mountains as his dwelling place. Over the centuries, it has been destroyed and rebuilt several times, but it has always maintained its spiritual and cultural significance.
The monastery complex is surrounded by fortress walls and consists of several buildings, including the main church, residential and administrative buildings, a museum, and a library. The main church, dedicated to the Nativity of the Virgin, is a combination of Byzantine, Bulgarian, and Russian architectural styles. It is adorned with beautiful frescoes and an exquisite carved iconostasis.
Rila Monastery is also home to a rich collection of religious art and artifacts, including icons, manuscripts, woodwork, and metalwork. The monastery’s library is one of the oldest and richest in Bulgaria, with over 16,000 volumes, including valuable 12th-century gospel books.
2. Rila Monastery is open for visitors all year round. The working hours vary depending on the season. From November to April, it is open from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, and from May to October, it is open from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM. It is worth noting that the monastery may have different working hours during national holidays or special events.
Unfortunately, we don’t have the phone number for the monastery available.
3. The entrance to Rila Monastery is free of charge. However, donations are highly appreciated to support the preservation and maintenance of the complex.
To reach Rila Monastery from Sofia, you can take a public bus or join a guided tour. The bus journey takes around 3 hours, and the guided tour may include additional stops at other attractions, such as the Boyana Church or the Rila Lakes. It is advisable to check the bus schedules or consult with a local tour operator for the most up-to-date information on transportation options.
