Sacred Elephanta: Private Caves & Breathtaking Island Escape
No address available
The Elephanta Caves are situated in Western India on Elephanta Island (also called the Island of Gharapuri), which highlights two hillocks isolated by a tight valley. The little island is dabbed with various old archeological remaining parts that are the sole declarations to its rich social past. These archeological remaining parts uncover proof of occupation from as soon as the second century BC. The stone cut Elephanta Caves were built about the mid-fifth to sixth hundreds of years AD. The most significant among the caverns is the incomparable Cave 1, which estimates 39 meters from the front access to the back. In plan, this cavern in the western slope intently looks like Dumar Lena cave at Ellora, in India. The principal body of the cavern, barring the porches on the three open sides and the back passageway, is 27 meters square and is upheld by lines of six sections each. Elephanta Caves are an UNESCO World Heritage Site.

A fantastic tour. You can see and hear the passion in Ragit’s voice as he told us the fascinating origins of the caves and their history. Shutti was also knowledgeable as she escorted us to the Island. Highly recommend.

Excellent tour from start to finish, a nice boat trip across from the Gateway of India to the caves. We we guided around by Manoj who provided us with great knowledge an expertise about the cave. We finished the tour with some local tea at the bottom of the hill before taking the mini train back to the boat to be returned to the Gateway of India boat terminus. 10 out of 10 goes to Manoj.

We booked Manoj through our hotel and struck lucky. Manoj was considerate to our needs in the heat of the day. On arrival he explained what we would see. To start, we took a small train to the enterance and then climbed 120 steps with stalls and covering from the sun. The climb was worth it to see the temple with the GOD Shiva. Manjo explained the history and relevance of Shiva to the Hindu religion. Manjo was an excellent guide
