Puerto Rico Bio Bay: Kayak Through Living Starlight!
Want a glowing and unforgettable night? This Bio-Bay Kayak Tour is what you need! On this tour, you will cross a canal inside the nature reserve that is surrounded by various types of mangroves. This protects from strong winds and helps you to paddle easily in peaceful waters. The best part of this tour is to enjoy the incredible glittering water of the "Big Lagoon"! Tiny bioluminescent organisms called "pyrodiniums bahamenses" are the responsible for this wonder of nature. They produce blue-green light from top to bottom of this bay every time you touch or move the water with your kayak!

No much light to see in the water. It was fun to be on the water in the dark. The guides and kayaks were good. I expected more to see in the water. Just a bit of glitter while under a tarp.

I had the expectation to really see a lot of light in the water. You have to be covered with a tarp to see a few glitters and that was disappointing

You need to go into this activity with the correct expectations. The kayaks are very comfortable and the guide gave very good instructions. The kayaking was actually not very strenuous and it is really cool to kayak in the evening through the mangroves. However, you do need to have the right expectations for the bio luminescent creatures that you’re going to see. Do not go by the photos. You actually end up pulling all the kayaks into one place and they put a tarp over you and then you run your hand through the water and you can see the bioluminescent creatures and they even pass around a jellyfish which consumes those,so it also glows. It’s more minimal than we expected, but was still cool to see.

Efficiently ran, fun group of guys took us out to the bay. Great equipment and they go over safety 101 before you leave. Williams, Jensen, and a 3rd employee took us out and position themselves in the front , middle, and rear of the group of 8 or 9 kayaks we were with. Everyone has neon glow rings attached to the kayaks. I would suggest booking this when the moon is not full. Or near full. The crew will cover everyone in a tarp if there is too much light pollution to see the bioluminescence easily. We also got to hold jellyfish (carefully) and touch them to see their bioluminescent reaction. Very cool experience ran by a fun and safe screw. Will probably go again ,planned around new moon.

First of all NEVER go when there is a full moon or near full moon. That being said the Fajardo bioluminescence is minimal compared to 10 years ago. The staff was okay, not really attentive OR informative…especially considering there were numerous other nationalities on the trip. There was a full moon and they tried to let people see the plankton by utilizing a tarp… meh. Maybe going to the shoreline where it was darker might have helped. The bay/plankton appears to be dying and the kayak trip was not worth the cost… send money instead to a conservation/science group wanting to save the bioluminescence….

Love this tour, we had great guides and a great time. They were quite fast for us senior ladies trying to kayak the channel in the dark. But they stayed with us and lighted the way. The only downfall is if you are booking this trip, try not to do it on a full moon. We had too much light in the lagoon to see the bioluminescence.

One of the reasons we came to Puerto Rico was to experience the Bio Bays. We had a great time with Williams, Lewis, Jensen and Jonathan—they made the experience fun for our big group. They gave good safety instructions and we felt safe the whole time.

We had a great time with Louis, Williams Jensen and Jonathan. The bioluminescence wasn’t as eight as we’d hoped, but we were able to see it and had a really fun kayak adventure there and back.

First, you will endure some arduous kayaking against current. There should be at least one physically able person in each kayak. It will be in the dark. First, in an open sea, then in a narrow passage with many turns. There will be small fish and shrimp jumping out of the water, as well as some bats. Then you arrive at a very big lagoon. The water doesn't seem to have any luminiscence at first. Then you put your hand in the water, and you see it emits sparks! Kayaking back is much easier since its along the current.
