Kyoto is one of the most culturally rich cities in Japan, home to numerous temples, shrines, and historical landmarks. The city has made great strides to become accessible for people with disabilities and seniors, with numerous efforts and initiatives in place. Here are some ways that Kyoto is making itself an accessible destination:

1. Advanced Public Transportation System

Kyoto’s public transportation system is one of the most advanced in Japan, making it easy for seniors and people with disabilities to get around. All buses have low floors and wide openings, making them wheelchair accessible. Additionally, many subway stations have elevators and ramps, which help to make them accessible to everyone.

2. Disabled-Friendly Attractions

Many of Kyoto’s most popular attractions have worked to become more accessible to people with disabilities and seniors. For example, Kinkaku-ji Temple has a wheelchair accessible route for visitors to explore the temple grounds. Nijo Castle has a wheelchair accessible route that allows guests to see the castle’s interior.

3. Accessibility-Friendly Accommodation

Kyoto has numerous accommodation options that have been designed or renovated to cater to the needs of seniors and people with disabilities. Many hotels in Kyoto have wheelchair accessible rooms with larger doorways and bathrooms.

4. Pedestrian Access

Kyoto has numerous street-level pedestrian crossings, often equipped with audible signals for visually impaired people. These crossings aid pedestrian traffic, but also cyclists.

5. Handicapped Rental Services

Kyoto has a good number of disabilities rental services. Many of them are air-conditioned vehicles equipped with wheelchair access, making it easy to explore and enjoy the city.

6. Assistance Services

Kyoto has various types of assistance services available. There are volunteer guides and “goodwill ambassadors” stationed throughout the city, providing visitors with assistance and information.

Overall, Kyoto continues to work towards becoming a more accessible destination for all visitors. With the introduction of more accessible infrastructure and the willingness of attraction and accommodation providers, disabled and aged people have a safer and more comfortable experience in the city.
