It covers an area of approximately 5.2 square miles and is named after a early Anchorage and aviation pioneer - Joe Spenard. The lake freezes over during the winter months and is used for winter activities like ice fishing, dog sledding and snowmobiling. In summer, travelers flock to Lake Spenard for activities such as fishing, boating, water skiing and kayaking. The lake is surrounded by a vibrant ecosystem which is home to many species of birds and fish.
