I took a Dharavi slum tour in Mumbai with a local guide, Anushka, and it was an excellent experience. Anushka was knowledgeable, respectful, and passionate about sharing the community’s story. The tour was well-organized and thoughtfully conducted, providing real insight into Dharavi’s people and industries without feeling intrusive. It offered a meaningful perspective on life in Mumbai and left a lasting impression.

Puja guided us around her neighbourhood of Dharavi, made famous by the film Slumdog Millionaire. She showed us the tough job of plastics recycling, making something out of all the world’s waste. Puja explained why people still move to the area, even though the work is very hard and long, and the conditions are not great. We also saw some of the other industries, like soap manufacture, clothing and leatherwork. Puja also took us round the residential areas, and it was humbling to see the tiny accommodation, but we received only friendly and warm greetings everywhere we went. Puja was an excellent guide, and we really enjoyed listening to her explanations of the area, and also got to meet her family, which was lovely. Our driver Shamsheer was excellent in navigating the mad traffic, small roads and many puddles from the unseasonal rain storms.

Varsha was an absolutlely wonderful tour guide. What an eye opening experience. A must see if you're at all interested in how "the other half lives". Truely, an experience I will not soon forget. Interestingly, the people seemed to be happily working. I didn't feel un-safe in the slightest; in fact, I felt safer there than in some other cities, even in America.

Snahee not only showed me everyday life of hardworking people, but also told me about her personal live and the culture of India. All those industries, most of them taking care of “our” collected plastics. An amazing afternoon, i am very grateful to meet her and the amazing people in Dharavi. Also the lunch with a local family was very tasty. Lovely to meet this family.

We recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes and appropriate clothing for women, such as fully covered clothes and no shorts, as we will be walking inside the slum. Due to uneven surfaces, this tour is not recommended for those with walking disabilities or using a wheelchair.24 hours before travel date - 100% refund
