In depth ride thru Soweto. Thabo was fantastic and shared so much history with us We really were able to “see” this area. The ride is fairly long and there are several hills. Be prepared

The bicycle tour of Soweto was a great way to visit this area. We learned a lot about the upheaval in 1976 and what it's like today. Enjoyed the church singing as we rode by (it was a Sunday am). The guide was experienced, friendly and interesting. Lunch as a treat (local food)!

With any kind of biking or walking tour, the skill and personality of the guide makes all the difference. Thabo was excellent and a walking encyclopedia of Soweto’s history. This is definitely the best way to experience Soweto. A walking tour will not cover enough and a van tour is too weird. The lunch that was included was “traditional” Soweto fare, but probably not palatable for Western visitors (French fries, hot dog, baloney on thick slab of bread), so bring along extra snacks.

This was an incredible and meaningful tour that gave us the chance to interact with locals and explore places we never would have discovered on our own. We sampled most of the local beers and food like chicken feet, kota, fish, pap, and minced meat sausage—and even took the local taxi/bus! Our guide, Iwazi, was genuine and proud to share his community with us, which made the experience all the more special. Please note: the tour includes walking through neighborhoods that some visitors may not be used to and might initially feel outside their comfort zone. But that’s exactly what makes this tour so impactful—it’s real. Come with an open mind, and be ready to try new things. We left with our hearts and stomachs full!

Thabo was a superb guide. Born and bred in Soweto, his knowledge and ability to tell the community’s story and history was just brilliant. The tour shows you much more than where most tourists go. Soweto is an integral part of modern South Africa’s history so an essential visit! The special lunch of Kota was also delicious!
