Franz Josef Glacier: Breathtaking Heli-Flight & Snow Landing

My wife had never had a helicopter flight before and I can think of no better place to experience it for the first time. In fact although I had logged a lot of spectacular helo time in Papua New Guinea, I was still blown away by this flight. The spectacle is stunning and the landing on the snow something else. Be aware though the snow underfoot is very slippery and solid footwear such as hiking boots are necessary for grip, though caution is still needed. The helo pads are 5 minutes walk from the main street cafes and bars, so very convenient. Worth every cent and not to be missed.

Well organised from start to finish and felt safe. Pilot (think it was Simon) was very informative and we got to land on the snow. It was just all too quick and we could have stayed up there for ever - well almost. I suppose the big plus for us was the weather. It was amazing so we were surrounded by deep blue sky. Overall, a great experience and worth the price.

We were blessed to be able to go on a flight over two glaciers with a snow landing included. The trip was magical. We knew that our flight, pre booked well in advance, was subject to weather conditions. The weather on the day was less than perfect and the entire staff were doing their very best to ensure that everyone was getting the best experience they could while thinking of the safety of the passengers. We were fortunate that the weather held off just enough to allow for the snow landing and the experience was just amazing. I cannot credit the entire team enough for the way they continually kept us informed of what was going on and made sure we all understood nearly minute to minute of any changes that were happening. The reception staff were kind, courteous and welcoming. The loading crew were polite and helpful. Tomas, our pilot, was the just the best. His commentary on the areas we flew over had just the right tone of information and humour. It really is an experience not to be missed. Two very excellent thumbs up to everyone involved.

Our 2pm flight was canceled due to cloud cover but the staff were able to put us on an 8am the next day. We had blue skies and wonderful conditions. It’s only a very short amount of time out of the helicopter, just enough time to get some pics and head back down. The flight itself was amazing, flying low over the glacier and up close to the waterfall.

This has been one of the best experiences during my New Zealand travels. The flight and glacier were breathtaking and I was in awe the whole time. The staff was incredibly friendly as well and made the experience even more enjoyable!! I‘d recommend this to anyone visiting South Island. It‘s a once in a lifetime experience.

As conditions did not allow a glacier landing, landing close to the base of the glacier on a high, otherwise inaccessible spot, was just as awesome, to appreciate the majesty of the glacier.

The Helicopter Line is a well-run, professional organization that does its job well. The entire staff was very helpful, they gave us a safety briefing beforehand, and then our pilot James was really adept at flying. This was our first time in a helicopter and it could not have been smoother. To land on and then exit the helicopter onto a glacier is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, I recommend everyone should do this!

Absolutely loved the experience. Friendly helpful staff (I called in at 9:15 to see if we could fly at 10:30 - which we could). Fantastic flight with great views and a landing on the glacier couldn’t recommend it enough.
