One of the first things I like to do when I touch down into a new place is to attend a walking tour of my destination city. There are a few tours available but I was drawn to this particular one due to how much ground it covered and its excellent reviews. And excellent it was! The evening before I was due to meet Sascha, he sent me a WhatsApp message with the exact location he would be waiting in (next to the Petrusbrunnen) along with a selfie and a description of where exactly the fountain was. This turned out to be sorely needed as my data was very patchy whilst in Germany, so I couldn't use my Google Maps as effectively. Sascha turned up right on time (unlike Deutsch Bahn, he quipped) with a handshake and a friendly smile. After we'd all got acquainted with the other tour attendees - all of us from the UK here to see the Markets - we went on our way to explore this beautiful city. Thankfully the group size was small and we could hear Sascha well. We started out with the Cathedral, of course, as we're right next to it - and there's quite a lot of focus on it too. The queues to get in are (understandably) huge, so to learn its history while outside is a perfect way to be introduced. There's a good mix of famous landmarks (Museum Ludwig, the Philharmonie, the Hohenzollern bridge, the Town Hall) and other buildings that the tourist might otherwise miss. I particularly liked the Tunnes und Schal statues: you can rub Tunnes's nose for good luck! To English-speakers they're best compared to Laurel and Hardy, and remain a fixture of Cologne Carnival to this day. For a break, we all dropped into BonBon, an unusual little shop that sells beautiful ceramic souvenirs and homewares, plus fresh coffee and tea. It was a dry but chilly day, so I sipped on some rooibos while we all chatted about our differing cultures in the UK and Germany from our Royal Family to taxation to humour. It was really interesting to hear of our similarities and differences. The tour ended right on schedule by the Cathedral, and Sascha was kind enough to stick around and help us with any directions we might need to our next destination. I bid farewell to my fellow tourists, gave my thanks to our tour guide and headed off in search of food, a lot more well-informed on Cologne and with a far better sense of direction. Thanks for the great introduction, Sascha!

It was raining and cold to start. Not the tour guides fault. Maybe he could have pulled to a covering once in a while to talk to us about what we were going to see then go to the spot. Also a lot what we were shown were small pictures on the wall. It was supposed to be 2 hours it was maybe 1:30. The pick up location was not clear and when texting to get help no one responded. I wouldn’t recommend this for the price.

We had a wonderful time on our Cologne tour. Sascha was fun, friendly, knowledgeable, and even waited for us when we were late! We ended right back at the cathedral and were able to walk around the beautiful Christmas market.
