Transformative Johannesburg & Soweto: Apartheid Museum Tour

The day tour of Johannesburg and Soweto apartheid history was informative, educational and moving. The tour guide and driver, Gabriel, was very good in explaining everything and answering my questions. The guides at Lilies Leaf farm house and Constitution Hill were also thorough in showing us the horrific history of apartheid and how the political prisoners were treated in humanely. The visit to Mandela's first house, and the houses of different classes of people living in Soweto were also educational. Overall, it was a very good tour and I highly recommend it.

Nice tour, not convinced about Mandela house. Feels like Winnie Mandela house, and not telling the full story story about Winnie, leaving her criminal activities out.

Our experience with our guide was absolutely incredible! From the moment the tour began, made everyone feel comfortable and excited for the journey ahead. The guide was extremely knowledgeable about the history, culture, and hidden gems of the area — sharing stories that made every stop come alive. The tour was well-organized, fun, and filled with unforgettable moments. We left with amazing photos, new insights, and memories that will last a lifetime.

I was travelling alone but two other women were added to the group so there were three of us in a comfortable air-conditioned car. Our guide was Victor and he was an excellent driver with prompt pickup and full of information about the city and its history. We saw a lot, at Constitution Hall, in Jo’berg, in Soweto, and at the Apartheid Museum. We were handed over to guides in different locations, so bring small money if you usually tip. I would recommend the tour as it covers a lot in one day. I would suggest starting one hour earlier, so 8:30 instead of 9:30. We chose to have a quick lunch at the Apartheid Museum so as not to lose any time inside, but even so had just under two hours there and could have used more time. All in all, very worthwhile.

Do Lilieleaf Farms!! We could have spent 5 hours here. This was a ‘replacement’ for the Apartheid museum (which is closed Monday and Tuesday) but we felt much better. Our driver Nathi was full of information, tailored our tour a bit and answered every question so thoroughly. We saw Mandela’s home, office, sites of apartheid resistance, the constitutional courthouse which was the former prison and several other significant sites. All tours were great and the lunch stop was traditional. A fabulous way to gain a great understanding and feel for what apartheid was and how it was overcome, and the history of Johannesburg.

This tour was excellent and the guide did a very good job about educating us about the city and places we were seeing. It ran smoothly and we got to see a wide range of things. This would be perfect if you are time poor in Joburg. Thanks for the good time.
