Sacred Elephanta: Private Caves & Breathtaking Island Escape
No address available
The Elephanta Caves are situated in Western India on Elephanta Island (also called the Island of Gharapuri), which highlights two hillocks isolated by a tight valley. The little island is dabbed with various old archeological remaining parts that are the sole declarations to its rich social past. These archeological remaining parts uncover proof of occupation from as soon as the second century BC. The stone cut Elephanta Caves were built about the mid-fifth to sixth hundreds of years AD. The most significant among the caverns is the incomparable Cave 1, which estimates 39 meters from the front access to the back. In plan, this cavern in the western slope intently looks like Dumar Lena cave at Ellora, in India. The principal body of the cavern, barring the porches on the three open sides and the back passageway, is 27 meters square and is upheld by lines of six sections each. Elephanta Caves are an UNESCO World Heritage Site.

We had an incredible tour of elephanta caves and elephanta island with Rajat. He is from the island and was very knowledgable and explained everything about the different caves and sculptures in detail. We definitely wouldn’t have noticed as many details without Rajat. He is amazing, would definitely recommend tour with him!

Elefanta Island is a great destination. The tour itself was super informative and Manoj is a great photographer. It did feel rushed and we got the package lunch with it which was mediocre. I think if I had been more direct and demanding it would have been better. We felt pushed into shopping at a vendor as opposed to choosing a vendor - and they were expensive. I recommend Elefanta Island as a destination but this tour was a bit lack luster.

Rajat was an excellent guide, very friendly and knowledgeable. He took us around and explained the story behind every group of statues in the caves, as well the history of this monument. The tour was very well organized in every aspect, with pickup from our hotel, transfer to the island ferry etc.
