Why Visit?

Poulnabrone Dolmen: A Portal to Neolithic Ireland

Nestled in the stark, haunting beauty of the Burren in County Clare, the Poulnabrone Dolmen is a striking portal tomb that dates back to around 3600 BC, making it one of Ireland"s oldest and most iconic archaeological sites. This ancient tomb presents a fascinating window into Ireland"s distant past and offers an evocative glimpse into the lives of the country"s early inhabitants.

Plan Your Visit

The best way to explore Poulnabrone Dolmen is by starting at the nearby town of Kilfenora, where you can delve into the local heritage at the Burren Centre. The Centre provides engaging exhibits on the geology, flora, fauna, and human history of the Burren area and sets the stage for your visit to the tomb.

From Kilfenora, drive approximately 15 minutes northwest on the R476, then continue onto the smaller R480. The route is well-signposted, leading directly to a parking area from where the dolmen is a short, accessible walk across the limestone pavement typical of the Burrean landscape.

At the Site

Standing boldly atop a rise in the karst landscape, the dolmen consists of a large capstone resting on two tall portal stones, under which lie the remains of a long, narrow chamber. Originally covered by a mound of earth or stones, what you see today is the stone "skeleton" of what was once a burial site.

During excavations in the 1980s, archaeologists discovered the remains of up to 22 people, along with various Stone Age artifacts, suggesting the tomb was in use for over 600 years. This insight, along with the dramatic setting, provides a compelling narrative of continuity and change in Neolithic Ireland.

Tips

- Visit during the early morning or late afternoon for the best light and fewer crowds.

- Wear sturdy shoes as the ground around the site can be uneven.

- Allow about 30 minutes to fully appreciate the site, though the profound sense of history may hold you longer.

Wrap Up Your Journey

Conclude your visit with a return to Kilfenora, where you can reflect on your experience over a hearty meal at one of the local pubs, surrounded by the rich musical traditions of County Clare.
