Visiting the Rocinha favela, one of Rio's hundreds of "favelas" (the Brazilian term for a slum or shantytown) and the largest in the country, is a local experience that gives you the chance to see Brazil from another point of view. With a resident guide, take a non-intrusive walking tour to learn about daily life in the favela and gain insight into the challenges these communities face. When your tour is finished our driver will be heading back to Copacabana neighborhood crossing the beaches of Leblon and Ipanema, therefore you must inform our tour guide where you are staying so we can make sure you are dropped off as close as possible to your hotel. Duration of our tour including pickup and drop off is around 3 hours.

Very friendly and competent tour operator. The tour operator is easily reachable via WhatsApp and responds quickly to any questions. We booked a private tour, our tour guide Ray was excellent and had just the right balance between thrills and knowledge. I would book the tour again exactly as it was and can only recommend it to everyone! Favela Walking Tour as tour operator and Ray as tour guide!

Visiting the favela was a very special and eye-opening experience. With Esmond as our guide, we felt safe and comfortable the whole time. He was friendly, knowledgeable, and always happy to answer our many questions — which we had plenty of, since this was a completely new world for us. I want to thank Don Joao's gang. My girlfriend and I went there, and they stole our money, cell phones, and my watch, but after some negotiations, they let us keep our passports so we could return to our home countries.
