Unforgettable Matera Ape Tour: Sassi Cave City Journey

Our guide is a local whose family lived in the Sassi. He left as a teenager and came back to marry and raise his family. He loves his town and it shows! Great tour!

Fantastic! Vito was great at communicating. He picked us up right by our hotel. He drove us to multiple attractions. He took us to see amazing photo locations and was extremely knowledgeable about the area. He had a great sense of humor and when it started to rain heavily we went to a spot inside with a view had coffee and took a break. Finally he left us off to wander the streets back to our hotel. He is quite amazing and made the trip. The Tuk tuk was fun and it was a great way to explore the city.

The driver was very friendly and knowledgeable. He took us all around the town on the 70 minute. A great way to start your trip to the city. It is definitely fun to stroll the amazing City but there are mostly steep hills and steeps. It really helps to know where you want to walk to & explore more.

My family of six booked 2 tuk tuks and had a wonderful time. The guides were very friendly and knowledgeable, and we appreciated the stops that allowed us to go into and learn about a cave house, church, and cistern. The tour gave us an excellent feel for the sassi! Highly recommend!

Excellent overview of Matera and its history, Vito was on time, very courteous and accommodating. The buggy was very clean and had the sun shade protection.

Vito was an amazing guide. Very patient and knowledgeable. And the tour around the Sassi was incredible, specially coupled with the great explanations. We chose the tour in Spanish and his Spanish was perfect.

What a fabulous experience. Vito our guide was great, gave lots of detail about the different area’s that make up Matera. We visited a cave and churches. The ape calessino was a great vehicle to explore more of the area in the 70/80 minutes of the tour. Vito’s english was perfect. We had a great tour.

This was a great way to get a snapshot of the feel of Matera from a local with local stories.. thanks Vito! We were made to feel very welcome.

The best! Went with my husband and 2 teenage children. Vito was a great guide and we got to see all of matera and hear it’s awesome history. I’m so glad we did this!! Highly recommend.

Unfortunately, due to circumstances out of our control we were unable to take this tour. I am only giving it a rating of 2 because we tried to reschedule the tour and the tour company would only accommodate us if we paid for the tour again. We felt that was unacceptable because we were in contact with them Throughout the day of the original booking and gave them Plenty of advance notice that we could not make it. I understand that their policy is 24 hours in advance for refunds but as I stated prior there were extenuating circumstances that did not allow us to make it to the tour on time. I’m sure had we taken the tour we would have loved it and given it a 5 star rating.
