Fez Private Day Tour: Meknes, Volubilis & Moulay Idriss

The tour was just very well organized. From the pickup in the hotel till the end. Oumina, our guide , and the driver, were just perfect. Professional and very prepared she was Kind and available at all times. Thanks!

The “private tour” was more of a vehicle transfer to the above mentioned places rather than a guided tour. The driver drives safely but speaks very little or incomprehensible English. At Volubilis, my guide was supposed to do a tour in English but could only speak French. I had to eavesdrop other tour guides providing commentary of the tour. For lunch, the tour operator fixed an expensive but very average restaurant which was not included in the price.

The tour is a must. So many beautiful things to see in only one day. Driss was an amazing guide. Lot of history, lot of free conversation and all of that with a nice touch of humor. We were already in love with Morocco. But Driss made us fall more in love.

Great tour around ancient cities like being back in time in ancient city life. Good driving. Expect a fee extra fees for local tours, well worth it.

The tour operator was professional and communicative - we knew the night before that our driver would be Abdul and when he’d be at our Riad. Abdul was lovely, professional, and kind. When we stopped by a vista, he went and got us figs. He gave an overview of the history of where we were - which was crucial for a short stop in Moulay Idriss where there isn’t signage, and had set us up with guides in Volubilis and Meknes (who were both knowledgeable - we’d done a bit of reading ahead of time and the guides knew their stuff - no dubious claims or false info). When we ran out of dirhams because we didn’t prepare correctly, he fronted us some cash to pay for incidentals. Of course we paid him back at the end - but his preparedness ensured that we had the best day possible. He was fantastic. The sites themselves were incredible and we encourage folks to pay for a guide in Meknes (you’ll cover more ground and get more out of your visit). Overall, a really lovely day and we learned a ton. Really recommend this tour if you have a couple of days in Fez and want to see some of the surrounding history.

It's not that this was a bad experience for us, but we really spent way too much time in a car. We had a great time in Volubilis, as the guide was really knowledgeable and friendly. We didn't stop in Moulay Idriss, we just drove past it. The driver did offer us to stop for picture reasons, but we didn't get to stop and walk around a bit. Meknes was kinda do your own thing. We had lunch there, walked around a little and hopped back into the car. The driver did gave us directions and helped us mapped our drives to the desert and all. It would have been a much worse experience driving from the desert to Marrakech if it's not for his advice.

The best part was Volubilis. Please, make sure to get guide to get immersed into history of this place.

A dirty, old car that stalled 3 times took us from Fes to Volubilis - when we got there, our guide could barely speak English. He did take great photos of us though! We had to read about it on Wikipedia to get a sense of what we saw there!

Excellent guides - however please confirm with the company beforehand where you will get your guides and where you won’t. We were told last minute of their hiring prices and it wasn’t cheap. Bad communication on the part of the Tour company….I wouldn’t blame the tour guides though.

Volubilis is absolutely stunning and well worth the trip...if you do go I hope you get the same driver as I did ,hassan he was simply the best and his choice of restaurant restored my faith in moroccan food...nothing was too much trouble for him polite and helpful and informative...moulay idriss is a must see too.
