In 1493, Christopher Columbus sighted the island and named it for its eel-like shape: Anguilla means "eel" in Spanish.
Anguillian boat racing is the island's number 1 sport.
The official currency is the Eastern Caribbean (EC) dollar (a U.S. dollar is equal to exactly $2.68 EC and does not float). Like many islands in the region US dollars intermingle - they are universally accepted, but you may get change in EC.
