A fantastic hike up a volcano with brilliant views. And a fun slide down! Great photos and videos taken by the guide during the walk and boarding down.

What an awesome , funtastic , exhilarating experience. My son and I had a great driver (Darwin) , excellent guide (Sterling) and helpful board carrier (Eduardo). The 3 of them combined were essential , helpful , and informative. My son and I started at 2pm where they picked us up at a local hotel (Azul). We got into a comfortable pick up truck with air conditioning and were greeted by Sterling the tour guide and the Darwin the driver. They drove us to the volcano location and picked up Eduardo our board helper over there. When they arrived to the location to check in you have to sign in as guests visiting the volcano. You are able to use the bathroom at that location as well as purchase water or electrolytes. I highly recommend you purchase the large water to bring with you on the volcano hike. Once you get to the drop off location you will be given a back pack with your helmet , gloves , and body suit. You can also place your water bottle inside there as you begin your amazingly adventurous hike up a volcano. You will begin walking down a path that will begin to get rocky. It isn’t hard to walk though but make sure you are wearing close toe shoes. Some of the path is a little steep but definitely doable for the average person. You are allowed to two as many breaks as you want and are able to take numerous pictures of the breathtaking views along the way. The tour guide will take pictures of you as you please as well. He will also be telling you facts about the area and volcanos in the area. The hike actually gets easier the higher you go because it smooths out and isn’t as much of an incline. Again , you can take a breather if needed as well as take beautiful pictures of the landscape as well as yourself. After About a 45 minute - 1 hr hike , could be longer depending on your breaks , you are finally to the top of the volcano. If you look about a a few mountain/ volcanos to the side , you can see a currently active volcano with steam coming from the top of it. Take as many pics of you and your family as well as panoramic pics of the area cause the view is simply stunning. When you are done you will walk to the designated boarding area. It’s on the smother portion of the volcano. There you will switch into your jumpsuit , helmet , and gloves. Your board carrier( Eduardo) will be waiting for you there with your volcano boards. Your guide with explain what to do or what not to do for the declining portion of your trip. Thai part is the adrenaline boosting thrill ride of the hike. Basically always maintain control of the handle and keep your feet (heels) touching the volcano ash ,rocks, or sand , whatever it is. You sit on the board and begin the decline. Just before the decline your guide with hop, skip or walk half way down the slope side so they can take pictures as well as video of you and your group while boarding down the volcano. They give you the sign and you then you begin your 1-2 minute ,could be longer, depending if you area thrill seeker or scaredy-cat. There is no right or wrong way to do it. My son went first and he went for moderation. So he kept his heels touching and excitedly boarded down the volcano. Working out once towards the bottom. Don’t be scared about wiping out , it is just like rolling off the board and is actually fun. He got back on and continued the down slope again until he reached the very bottom. There he was able to see me go and it’s pretty exciting to watch people boarding down the volcano ash well. It’s finally my turn to go and I am a little more careless than my son so I was going for extreme speed to get my adrenaline pumping to the max. So I began my decline and as I passed my guide who was filming and taking pics of us as we headed towards the bottom. As I passed him you can scream, make a face or do whatever you please or think looks cool on video. I went for a little scream , with a little surf sign with my hand , and lifting my feet off the volcano. I felt as if that would be the cool thing to do. I sped past my guide with a super speed which was so much fun. About 15 seconds later I was tumbling off my board due to the speed and me lacking control. It was so much fun even tumbling off the board. It did not hurt at all. Just make sure if you fall off your board to keep holding the handle. The board could continue going and leave you behind. I got back on my board and continued the rest of the ride with speed all the way until I reach the bottom where my son was waiting for me. It was an amazing hike up the volcano and a thrilling ride down it. Once finished the guide will meet you in the bottom and give you a celebratory Gatorade. He will also provide some wipes to clean off your face that will get a little dirty , probably for me and my son a little more since we wiped out once. You take some pictures of yourselves and the scenery once more or even the other people boarding down the volcano. From there you take your body suit , helmet and gloves off and put them in the bag. Darwin or driver put the bags and boards in the rear of the pick up and we all got back in the pick up and sadly continued back to or hotel drop off. Myself and my son had such a fun time hiking up and boarding down. The next time I go to Nicaragua I will totality be doing this again and I aim for more speed and control for the next time. Amazing time for yourself and other if you are in a group. I recommend this for anyone that would like to do something adventurous or even the non adventurous type. You can go down as slow as you want and there was some people doing that. This event is sometime that everyone must try in their lifetime. Great job Sterling , Darwin and Eduardo!!!!! Thank you for the memories and adventure.

Unforgettable Volcano Boarding Experience – Thanks to Sergio! What made it truly special was our guide, Sergio. From the moment we started the drive, Sergio went above and beyond. He gave us such a rich explanation of the history of Cerro Negro and the surrounding area, making the journey there just as fascinating as the activity itself. The hike up the volcano wasn’t easy, but Sergio was right there with me every step of the way. He helped me navigate the rocky terrain, kept me motivated, and when the strong winds threatened to knock me over, he literally helped keep me steady—both physically and emotionally! I truly don’t think I could have made it to the top without his patience and encouragement. During the actual boarding, I was nervous, but Sergio was so gentle, patient, and supportive. He never rushed me, explained everything clearly, and made sure I felt safe and confident before I took off. His kindness made all the difference in helping me enjoy the experience instead of fearing it. If you're thinking about volcano boarding, I highly recommend doing it with Sergio. He’s not just a guide—he’s a true professional with a heart of gold. Gracias, Sergio, for making this such a memorable experience!

Absolutely amazing experience. Our guide was Sterlying. He was awesome. I am sorry, but I forgot what our drivers name was. He was great also. Our tour was delayed 30 minutes and Sterlying was great with communication. On our trip up, we received lots of knowledge about the volcanoes in the area as well as what to expect. We were never rushed. Told us to take a break when needed. We felt safe at all times. He took great pictures on the way down. He had Powerade waiting for us when we got to the bottom. We saw many other tours in the “chicken busses”. I am glad that we did not book those tours. We would not hesitate to do this activity again. Thanks for everything

I did this activity while on a G adventures group tour. Franklin was an excellent guide and told us a lot about the volcano. The hike beforehand was very interesting and rewarding. The volcano boarding itself is very cool and I don’t think you can get a similar experience anywhere else. I was worried about injuries but no one in my group of 15 got more than a few cuts and scrapes. I deliberately went very slowly but even so there was a spot near the end where I nearly lost control… it was so fun though!! It’s worth saying as well that Franklin takes 100s of photos and videos on his professional equipment and he definitely knows how to take the best shots for social media. We listened to great music for most of the way up as well. Overall I loved it and would definitely recommend to travellers through Central America.
